Mavis Staples

i was listening to 'wait, wait, don't tell me' on npr and mavis staples was the guest today. i didn't know who she was really but now i think i love her. she is a gospel singer and used to be in her family gospel-band the staple singers. dr. martin luther king used a lot of their songs during his public speeches (so did obama) and she was engaged to bob dylan!!

besides being an important musician/ civil rights activist she is really funny and charming on the radio and look how cool she looks in this picture!!!

I was talking to one of my girls the other day about how much we love rockabilly style only we wish we were rich enough/weren't lazy and then we would dress rockabilly all the time.

anyways, right now I am watching "The Rockabilly Legends: They Called It Rockabilly Long Before It Was Called Rock 'n' Roll" on tv which is crazy, b/c I don't think I've ever seen anything rockabilly on tv before!

they focus on the beginning of rockabilly, specifically on artists elvis presley, carl perkins, buddy knox, johnny cash, roy orbison, and buddy holly. right now they're talking about/showing music/showing old interview footage of how carl perkins created the song "blue suede shoes."

there is an article in the new vanity fair that suggests (asks?) if a newly-discovered photo depicts robert johnson, my blues king. there are only 2 known photos of him (the article says there are a couple more but the public has never seen it b/c there is/has been a huge litigation bullshit thing going on for the last few decades about his estate)

this duo is right up debwa's alley. we should have a dance-off.

kd if you aren't into this band then I don't know you at all. definitely listen to more than just this song to fully get the sound. apparently they are a duo from austin, texas, and describe their sound as "A robot making love to a tree!!" maybe everybody has heard of them already they have been around since 2004 but I suck at the new music thing and just listened to them this weekend

a friend saw them live playing at some san francisco party or something I don't remember where she said but she said they are the most amazing live band eva. and I don't think she's even into this type of music! that means they are incredible.

new music

hoxton has played host to two lovely festivals in the past couple of weeks; stag and dagger and hox to dot. I was really into them both because i got to see bands i am into, but also i got to find out about new music i had never heard (which is one of my favorite things in life). Here are two:

Primary 1: basically the talking heads of 2008. they have a great frontman.

Juiceboxxx: if you don't find his milwaukee nerd voice instantly endearing, his beats and rhymes will surely do the trick.




notice his nerd-core style. he was wearing the unicorn shirt with lightning bolts when he played.

oh and i also watched euro-vision for the first time ever, which is a music contest were about 25 european countries submit an act and they all perform and everyone votes on who is the best. but the acts are usually people who are semi-big in the country, just not world wide. russia won and they had one of the worst songs, but at least i got to see france, which was AMAZING. they entered sebastien tellier, who i already know a little bit via the club scene, but never really paid attention to before because i thought he made boring house music (WRONG). He had 5 lady back up singers all wearing fake beards like him and rolled up onstage in a golfcart, looking like a character from the big lebowski/ royal tennenbaums and sang a really chill song. it was just so good.

japanese music.

i have to admit, i didn't really scope out the music scene in tokyo, aside from seeing some band with an extreme harmonica player on a stage outside the tube station.

now I am obsessed with the song in my rockabilly video, but since i can't speak japanese, i can't really figure out what the song is. I've tried every possible way of finding it, but no luck.

in my searching i came across two japanese bands that joebot told me about a long time ago and i sort of forgot about: portugal japan and the polysics. The polysics are pretty main stream i guess, but they were just one of those bands i always heard people talk about but forgot to actually listen to. Here is the new polysics video:

(p.s. all the school kids have book bags like the one in this video, they are so nice, i really wanted one but couldn't find them anywhere.)
