new hobby?

ah, reddit.com. such a fun way to pass 3 hours. also, it gave us a new idea to steal -- debwa is a little low on funds right now, so incorporating a painting hobby (supplies, canvas, frame, etc) can be a bit tough. however, we definitely COULD just paint/draw over thrift store finds. like this:

clouded apollo

I really really like this artist's, Chloe Early, work. Her paintings from the collection(?) "clouded apollo" are a quite interesting mix of half-undone fantastical settings but then have pieces of great detail and her use of shadow and darker colors are so beautiful. I like the softness of some lines and the hard edges of others.

legos in holes

this may or may not be as exciting as it sounds. personally, I am into it.


Dispatchwork is project by Jan Vormann where he fills up holes in walls with Lego bricks. He did this before in Bocchignano, a village close to Rome, and Tel Aviv. This time he did in Berlin, where he and many spontaneous helpers filled World War II bullet holes at a building of Humbold University. You can find some other patched walls around town too.
He also has a exhibition at the Jarmuschek + Partner gallery in Berlin till June 13th.

this english dude julian beever does trompe-l'œil chalk drawings on pavement surfaces aka awesome 3D shit. wikipedia says he's been doing it since the mid-1990s
his works are done using a thing called anamorphosis which creates the illusion of 3D when viewed from the right angle . . . for example, here is a chick in a swimming pool:

today i went to bexhill to see 'unpopular culture' - a selection of works from the Arts Council by Grayson Perry (who also had two of his pieces on display). The works are all modern (i'd say post WWII though the 70's mainly, not like MODERN modern) and are all sort of nostalic and a bit somber. It's supposed to be exactly what you don't think of when you think of this period of art. I think most of the pieces were lovely, especially the photography.

oh and about grayson perry.
one of the big reasons I am into Grayson Perry is because he has a transvestite alter ego named Claire (like Bruno and Rodrigo). And also that his alter ego is a little girl and not some bizarro version of a woman aka almost every other tranny ever.


He is also an amazing artist and does things in mediums that i think are really interesting and fairly unexplored (i.e. embroidery and painted pottery). He also won the Turner Prize in 2003.

The Wellcome collection

Yesterday Mr. Fantasy and I went to visit the Wellcome Colletion, which is not a shitty place to buy souviners and use the toilet when you enter a new state (like in america) but actually a small collection of galleries and special exhibits all touching on the common theme of medicine. The collection was originally started by Sir Henry Wellcome.

My first favorite thing was a sculpture by John Isaacs called 'I can't help the way I feel'


I also was really into the special exhibition called 'Life Before Death' which is a collection of photos of terminally ill people one close to their death and then one just after, with a little bit of information on them and how they felt about their life and their soon to be death. It wasn't depressing at all actually, and I actually felt a bit up lifted after leaving.

there is this venezuelan artist named david foote who is new york based now, and he has a v. dark persona apparently, and I can't remember where I heard about him and there is almost no info on him on google, but I thought I would share what I found.


he is a director, too, and has a film company called fluorescent films (they do music videos, commercials, etc) . . . I don't know, his reel is pretty sweet

when I was looking at the bomb it (documentary mentioned below) site I saw some art that looked familiar. I came across this pic sometime last year and blogged about it but didn't know where it was from and then I saw the same style on the bomb it site so I kept looking and found out about these 2 motherfuckers.






Os Gemeos, Portugese for “the twins,” are Brazil’s most world renowned graffiti artists/muralists. The identical twins began painting in ’88 and today work on canvases, sculptures, graphic design, and outdoor walls, making the transition from street credibility to international art gallery phenoms. They are huge for doing pichaçao (tag) spontaneously on the street.

pierre et gilles

i was in the bookstore yesterday and i saw a book by and about the romantic/ artistic french couple; pierre and gilles. i wasn't familiar with their work, but they've done loads of celebrity portraits, including dita von teese, and porn star portraits as well. they remind me of jean paul gaultier + glitter + david la chapelle. but maybe that is a really ignorant comparison... their pictures have a very theatrical feel to them; they make most of their sets and costumes, and most feature homosexual/ religious/ pop culture/ sailor themes. the other really interesting thing about their work is that they retouch a lot of their photos to give them the feel of a black and white photo that has been painted (my great aunt had a job doing this) or a posterized, pop art type look, which i think adds to fantastical nature of each piece.

the pictures of their home in the book remind me of pee wee's play house.

Leslie Hall

gay pride black girl posted a vid of leslie and the ly's on my myspace and i was SO into it. But I was also really excited because i recognized her from an issue of BUST magazine that i had long forgotten about. leslie, i think before her hip-hop days, has a huge collection of GEM SWEATERS (like what middle aged rich jewish ladies from north jersey wear)and created a mobile gem sweater museum out of them. she really has a lot and they are all amazing.
