College Baseball: UCLA Trevor Bauer Puts A Ceiling On The Fresno State Batters
When UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer had completed an impressive 3-1 victory over Fresno State, eliminating the Bulldogs in the NCAA Regional on Saturday, it seemed clear that the best chance to get to Bauer was before the game.
Bulldogs coach Mike Batesole decided to have a serious discussion with home plate umpire Josh Scheipis. "We were just storing a few basic rules the other day," said Batesole after.
Indeed - and UCLA receiver Steve Rodriguez went with the truth - Batesole complained cap well worn and faded Bauer.
"He said he was white and he made it illegal," said Rodriguez. "Ump said that was the question of the team."
The ground rules established, Bauer (13-2) hit four of the first six batters and 14 of the game. It returned 203 strikeouts this season Bauer Mark Prior to break a record 10-Pacific conference in a season and had moved into second on the list of career strikeouts behind Tim Linecum conference.
"We live another day," said UCLA coach John Savage in reference to the overall victory.
Bruins out of a 3-0 loss to San Francisco on Friday, was facing elimination. They needed every bit of performance as Bauer UCLA hitters were again sleep more than wood (or metal).
Bruins stranded 14 runners and had two for 11 with eight runners in scoring position.
"It's very frustrating," said Savage. "But it was just our style."
Bauer style has been to hide deficiencies. He was not much different Saturday. "It 's just been Trevor is Trevor, Savage said.
Bauer allowed just five hits and finished strong, striking out the side in the seventh and eighth. He threw 133 pitches to complete his ninth game in a row. Stress on the Bulldogs seemed to cause him pain of hunger at the end.
